- Jubilation in PDP Secretariat
- Lyon aborts swearing in rehearsal
The Peoples Democratic Party (PD) has congratulated its governorship candidate in Bayelsa State, Senator Diri Duoye, over the Supreme Court ruling which pronounced him the governor-elect.
The apex court, in its ruling on Thursday, nullified the victory of David Lyon as Bayelsa State governor-elect, and his deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo.
The apex court thus declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate winner of the last governorship election in the State.
The panel of Justices led by Justice Mary Odili directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Lyon.
Justice Mary Odili ordered INEC to issue fresh certificates of Return to the candidates of the party with the next highest votes, which is the PDP.
In his reaction to the development, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan twitted: “Congratulations to the PDP family.”
And moments following the court ruling, the National Secretariat of the PDP in Abuja erupted in jubilation.
Members of the party could not control their joy at the secretariat when news of the apex court’s ruling filtered in especially after the judges named the party’s candidate, Diri Duoye, as the rightful winner of the election.
The new governor of the state will be inaugurated in Yenegoa on Friday.
But it was a different story in Lyon’s camp. The court ruling torpedoed the elaborate preparations already made for his inauguration.
Lyon was in fact said to have been rehearsing for his swearing in ceremony when the bad news came from Abuja.
Dressed in a multi-coloured shirt and flanked by military personnel, Lyon was seen in pictures having his pre-swearing-in exercise on the parade ground.
Lyon was seen in all-smiles waving at supporters who cheered him.
