As Nasarawa State gears up for the 2027 governorship election, Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada stands as the All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer with a compelling combination of deep local roots, people-centred politics, and the full weight of the state’s dominant political machinery behind him. Plitical commentors across the state believe his path to victory is framed not merely by ambition, but by two decades of consistent engagement with the people and the structural advantages of a ruling party that has governed the state effectively.
Wadada’s greatest asset is his long immersion in the political terrain of Nasarawa. A grassroots politician of over twenty years, he has navigated the state’s complex ethnic, zonal and local dynamics from the House of Representatives (2003–2011) through to his current role representing Nasarawa West in the Senate. This is no outsider parachuting into the race. He knows the wards, the traditional institutions, the market associations and the everyday concerns of communities across the three senatorial districts. That intimate knowledge of the landscape gives him a decisive edge in mobilisation and message delivery that few rivals can match.
Beyond familiarity with the terrain, Wadada has anchored his politics on the welfare of the people, often extending his interventions beyond his immediate constituency. Whether through legislative advocacy, community projects or direct support, his record has consistently prioritised tangible improvements in livelihoods. In a state where voters reward leaders who deliver results rather than rhetoric, this people-first approach has built a reservoir of goodwill that transcends narrow sectional interests. It is this reputation that Governor Abdullahi Sule highlighted when he endorsed Wadada as the embodiment of the “Muje Maha” spirit of inclusive governance that has defined the current administration.
That endorsement carries enormous practical weight. The APC remains the most robust political organisation in Nasarawa State, with structures that reach every local government and ward. Behind Wadada stands the unwavering support of Governor Sule and the entire government machinery—political appointees, local government chairmen, state legislators and party executives who have demonstrated loyalty to the governor over the years. This is not abstract endorsement; it translates into coordinated mobilisation, access to the levers of state influence, and the ability to present a united front. Recent movements of defectors into the APC, including groups formerly aligned with other parties, further underline the consolidating power of the Sule-Wadada axis.
The contrast with the main challenger is stark. Former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, who came a distant second in the APC primaries, subsequently defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). That decision cost him dearly. An estimated two-thirds of his support base stayed behind, wary of gambling on a new party and a relatively new entrant into the turbulent waters of competitive state politics. For many of those supporters, loyalty to the party proved more sacrosanct than the personal ambition of any individual. In Nigerian politics, where party structures, incumbency advantages and organisational continuity often determine outcomes, abandoning a dominant platform for a smaller one is a high-risk move that has historically left candidates isolated.
Wadada’s candidacy therefore rests on four interlocking strengths: deep grassroots knowledge of Nasarawa’s political geography; a proven focus on people’s welfare that resonates beyond his home base; the institutional power of the APC as the state’s most formidable party; and the active loyalty of the sitting governor and the full apparatus of government. Together, these factors position him not just as a candidate, but as the vehicle through which the APC can retain power and continue its developmental trajectory.
The road to Government House in Lafia will still require disciplined campaigning, issue-based messaging and careful management of residual grievances from the primaries. Yet the fundamentals favour Wadada. In a contest where organisation, continuity and proven connection to the people usually prevail, Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada enters the 2027 race with the clearest pathway to delivering Nasarawa for the APC.
