Emotions ran high at the Nasarawa State Internal Revenue Service (NSIRS) headquarters as staff bid an emotional farewell to their Executive Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Yakubu Mohammed, whose tenure has officially come to an end.
Our reporter who was present at the handover ceremony held at the headquarters of the board alng Jos road in Lafia, said staff members were in tears reflecting the deep sense of loss and appreciation for a leader credited with transforming the state’s revenue generation landscape.
Many who sobbed while speaking described the moment as bitter, with colleagues hugging, sharing memories, and expressing gratitude for his visionary leadership.
Alhaji Ahmed Yakubu Mohammed assumed office as Executive Chairman around March 2018 for an initial four-year term and was later reappointed. Under his stewardship, NSIRS recorded remarkable growth in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). In one notable highlight, the state’s IGR surged from approximately ₦6 billion annually to ₦37 billion between January and November 2025 alone.
His administration was praised for introducing digital innovations, enhancing staff capacity building, strengthening collaboration with federal agencies like the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and expanding the revenue base despite challenges. He also spearheaded initiatives such as annual staff reward programs, which were expanded into week-long celebrations to boost morale.
In interviews and public engagements, Alhaji Mohammed often emphasized teamwork, professionalism, and the importance of partnerships in unlocking Nigeria’s revenue potential. A staff member said: “Alhaji Mohammed didn’t just lead; he built a family. He brought innovation, fairness, and growth. Seeing him leave is painful, but we are grateful for the foundation he laid.”
